Work has begun to construct Trumpton village on Torrington Commons ahead of 2015’s giant bonfire.

WORK has begun to construct an entire replica village of the television series Trumpton – before setting it alight in 2015.

As revealed in the Gazette in November, the Torrington Cavaliers will be hosting another giant bonfire on Torrington Commons in August next year.

Famed for their fire spectaculars, the Cavaliers have been putting on the giant shows for decades and the last event saw them burn a full-sized medieval castle in 2010.

That event raised £60,000 to help local charities and as their next project is constructed from wooden crates and pallets, they hope to raise even more money.

Cavalier Nick Hallam said: “The first poles going in is a very exciting time for us, as after months and months of planning and discussions, it makes it real.

“There is now 16 months of hard work ahead of us.

“We’d like to thank those who have donated the trees and lent us the heavy machinery that we need for this stage of the project.”

“The poles form the skeleton of the construction, so everything is built off them.

“After all the poles are in, we can actually start building some key features of Trumpton village so in a few months time, people will hopefully start to recognize it.

“We will soon need lots of pallets for the main bulk of the bonfire, so if there are any businesses that can donate and deliver them to site, please contact us via our website.”
