Torridge receives half-a-million-pound funding to fix coastal defences

TORRIDGE District Council has secured almost half a million pounds worth of funding for coastal defences work following the winter storms last year.

The £445,000 from the Environment Agency’s storm damage recovery programme has been allocated to repair sea defences at Westward Ho!, Northam and Bucks Mills.

Councillor Philip Collins, leader of Torridge, said: “‘This is much needed funding and I’m delighted we have secured such an amount.

“There’s plenty of work to do now in Westward Ho! and on Northam Burrows and we’ve already started at Bucks Mills.”

Specialist contractors will be drilling bore holes in isolated locations in the slipway car park and the promenade during next week.

Cllr Collins added: “We realise the timing of this exploratory drilling in Westward Ho! is not ideal, and I do apologise for that.

“But in order to get the defence works completed before winter we need to get the ball rolling now for the long term protection of Westward Ho! with its vibrant local economy and excellent restaurants and businesses.”

The bore hole drilling will begin on Monday and is expected to last one week.
