People urged to prepare for flooding as heavy rain hits region tonight and tomorrow.

PARTS of North Devon have been put on flood alert with forecasters predicting up to 80 mm (three inches) of rain over the next 48 hours.

The met office has issued an amber alert with more heavy rain on the way overnight and tonight (Sunday) and tomorrow.

The Environment Agency is warning residents and emergency responders to prepare for an increased risk of flooding in the upper and lower Torridge areas, including Torrington, Bideford and coastal streams in the Hartland and Clovelly.

It warns that river levels are expected to rise and that flooding is possible this evening, overnight and into the early hours of tomorrow morning.

It said significant disruption, including disruption to travel and flooding of properties and communities, was possible.

Teams have been mobilised teams across the county to check on flood defences, clear any river blockages and closely monitor river levels.
