Commuters have experienced queues of up to an hour and the drainage works are set to continue until mid December.

DRAINAGE works on the A39 at Bideford have caused chaos this week as angry commuters have found themselves stuck in traffic.

Some Bideford-bound motorists have complained of hour-long tailbacks due to roadworks on the Bideford side of the Torridge Bridge, which started on Thursday.

Many took to social networking sites to vent their frustration and spread word of the chaos, with some on Twitter, doing so under the hashtag #bidefordroadworks.

Among them, @Paulspencer1976 said: “Starting a hashtag for Bideford area link road drivers to share the next 2 mths of pain #bidefordroadworks”.

Another user, @Llamakevin, said: “Dashed out at 3pm to take something to East the Water - worst #ndevon traffic chaos in the 10 years I have lived here #torridebridge”.

Reader Bob Lovelace, from Bideford, contacted the Gazette yesterday morning (Tuesday) to say he had seen little action from workmen, who according to Devon County Council, will be on site from 7am to 5.30pm until mid-December.

He said: “After queuing last Friday for an hour towards Bideford, I found only 100 metres of traffic queuing towards Barnstaple and guess what, little to no activity on the works.

“Yesterday I sat for 40 minutes as I made my way towards Barnstaple at only 8.20am and when I finally drove past these incumbent lights I found absolutely no works activity at all.

“I must be among literally hundreds of motorists who feel both outraged and frustrated by this.”

A Devon County Council spokesman said the works were planned to be completed by mid December.

She said: “Essential maintenance works are being carried out along the A39 to replace the existing drainage and also the carriageway surface between Heywood Road Roundabout and Torridge Bridge before the onset of winter.

“The drainage works, which are the first phase of the project, are being completed as quickly as possible, with some works being undertaken over weekends.

“The surfacing phase of the project will follow immediately on from the drainage works but will be carried out at night.”

  • Hell of a great idea doing this in the run up to Christmas, puts you right off travelling to either Bideford or Barnstaple for any shopping. Bet the old route and old Bridge in Bideford are getting a caning too...we had planned to go and see the new Bond film at Barnstaple, don't think we'll bother now.
