Copy Catz in Caen Street marks the centenary of the loss of the famous ship.

A BRAUNTON shop is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

Copy Catz in Caen Street has given over its entire front window display to mark the loss of the famous White Star liner, which sank on April 15, 1912 after striking an iceberg.

Shop owner Delphine Poulter, who runs the shop along with son Julian, asked husband David to create the model of the ship as a centre piece for the display.

“She wanted to put the display together to remember the people who died,” said David, 69.

“She has always believed the ship should not be remembered because it sank, but because it was the biggest moving object made by man and the most luxurious liner in the world.

“All I did was build the ship, Delphine did an awful lot of research and put the display together.”

The window dressing includes copies of photographs from the time, as well as newspaper accounts of the sinking and copies of other memorabilia.

The RMS Titanic was on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The sinking caused the deaths of more than 1,500 people.

An engineer by trade, David has made a variety of models including scale replicas of historical field cannon and Gatling guns.

His next project could well be a scale model of Braunton Station as it was in the 1950s, on behalf of Braunton Museum.
