Barnstaple man ordered to pay compensation after taking items from parked car

A BARNSTAPLE man has told magistrates he ‘couldn’t remember’ breaking into a car and stealing a sat nav, CDs and sunglasses.

Martin Lee Collins, 30, of Bear Street pleaded guilty to the theft of the items from a Renault Megane on Alexandra Road on February 20 after getting drunk.

“The evidence is irrefutable but I have no recollection of my actions that night,” said Collins, representing himself.

“The last thing I remember is being in the pub then I woke up and saw all the stuff.

“I just hoped it would go away.”

Collins was linked to the crime via blood DNA, and handed a number of the items he stole into the police.

He was, however, ordered to pay compensation for two pairs of sunglasses and one CD.

He was also made to pay for the damage caused to the car, including a smashed rear window and a broken ignition valve.

In total, Collins was ordered to pay £200 in compensation, and warned by sitting magistrate Judith Killen to cut down on his alcohol consumption.
