Charity 50th anniversary bash is hailed a great success amid rumours it may not quite be the end for former 1960s rock ‘n’ roll band.

BARNSTAPLE rock ‘n’ roll legends The Summits rolled back the years on Friday at a sell-out charity concert.

Despite approaching, or past, 70 years of age, original Summit members Gil Jones and Chris Verney were joined by a variety of local performers for a much-anticipated 50th anniversary reunion.

The event at the Ex-services and Social Club was held to raise money for North Devon Hospice, Devon Air Ambulance and the Chemotherapy Appeal, with all performers giving their time free of charge, plus a raffle with 40-plus prizes donated by local businesses.

The bill included young musicians Sophie Taylor and Dominic Pullen, both aged 12, plus singer Will Parsley, local duo Rod Jenkins and Lynne Burland and country performer Roger Colome.

The ‘Summit Else Band’ also took a turn or two on stage, with guitarists Colin Shore and John Beer plus Terry Bond on drums.

The original Summits had a big following in their North Devon heyday and with reports the tickets could have sold out twice over, it seems the name still has some power.

It was lead singer Gil’s first time back on stage for 50 yaers, but the band closed out the show with a range of 1960s classics.

“The response was tremendous,” said Chris Verney.

“The whole thing went far better than we could have imagined. Now we are talking about maybe doing another one in the new year or the end of this year.”
