Welly day at Tesco Bideford raised £200 to help victims of flooding in the South West.

SHOPPERS across North Devon and Torridge have rallied around to collect £1,000 for flood victims across the South West.

Tesco stores in Bideford, Barnstaple, Braunton and Ilfracombe are encouraging shoppers to donate food, money and clothes to the Devon Community Foundation.

At Tesco Bideford on Saturday, the store held a ‘Welly Day’ with a local farmer lending a tractor and trailer, raising £200 for the cause.

Sallie Mckay-Roper, Bideford Tesco’s community champion, who helped to organise the collection, said: “As soon as we heard about the flooding, we wanted to do everything we could to help.

David and James Grigg, who lent the tractor to the day, also donated 50 bags containing 10kg of potatoes to the store’s appeal.

Sallie added: ““I am overwhelmed by all the support from the community, especially at such short notice.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to David and James Grigg for their help and support, to John Webber and his volunteers from Bideford Rotary who helped us to collect and of course to all our colleagues at Tesco Bideford who wore wellies all day.

“We hope that our customers will display their generosity and show the strength of the community in the South West.”
