AN 18-year-old from Bratton Fleming will be meeting local MEP candidates over the coming months to ask them to take action against extreme poverty.

Sam Dunbavin, who will be starting at Cambridge University in September, was chosen from more than 300 applicants to be one of 25 ONE Youth Ambassadors.

As part of his role for the charity fighting against poverty, Sam will be calling on all South West MEP candidates to commit to decisive action against extreme poverty.

Sam said: “I’m really excited to start the volunteering for ONE in earnest over the next few weeks, and doing as much as I can to raise the profile of a cause that I feel incredibly strongly about.

“I first became interested in international development when I went out to Uganda in 2010, with Amigos Worldwide, and since then I have been volunteering regularly for Amigos, which has opened my eyes to the massive issue of poverty, particularly in Africa.

“I was sent an email from ONE, about the opening of the Youth Ambassador scheme, and felt it was too good an opportunity to miss.”

Sam visited London earlier this month for the opening of the programme and spent two days there where he met MEP candidates, journalists and was given a tour of 10 Downing Street.

After a trip which Sam said was ‘eye opening’ he now hopes to track down local MP candidates as well as giving talks around the region on ONE’s work.

“At the heart of our campaigning, is the message that MPs and MEPs don’t work for themselves,” he added.

“They work for us, as citizens, and it is important to let them know that we feel passionately on a subject.

“As one person, we can feel insignificant. But as a group, if we unite with our voices we can really make a difference.”
