Former St Michael’s School could become family residence and holiday units with ‘employment hub’.

A PLANNING application has been submitted to convert the former St Michael’s School in Tawstock into holiday accommodation.

In December 2011 the former school announced it was facing closure, and after a failed bid by parents to save the school, it was sold in July 2012.

Rik Peryer, who purchased the Tawstock Court building and grounds, has now applied to North Devon Council for the change of use.

A statement submitted with the application said: “Following the closure of St Michaels School at Tawstock Court, a new owner was sought to purchase the site and buildings.

“Whilst the sale represented a great opportunity to enjoy a unique and historic site there was also a huge responsibility to restore, maintain and preserve the heritage assets that were already badly deteriorated.

“Thus the overall philosophy guiding the proposed re-development of Tawstock Court has been to create a viable economic future for the site and its historic buildings whilst trying to have the minimum environmental impact possible.

“This strategy is intended to ensure economic provision for the future maintenance and preservation of the heritage assets whilst minimising the negative impact on the context within which they sit and the wider environment.”

The application involves converting the main house to a residential dwelling for the Peryer family, and convert the ground floor spaces of the coach house and theatre into holiday lets.

Overall the application looks to prove 13 holiday units, and to create an employment hub with conference facilities in the redundant school buildings.
