WITH sunny weather predicted for the Easter weekend, fire fighters are warning walkers to be mindful of the damage caused by gorse fires.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service attended a number of gorse fires in North Devon last year during the dry, sunny weather.

Those out exploring the countryside are asked to ensure they extinguish cigarettes and other smoking materials properly.

Avoid throwing cigarettes out of car windows, using open fires in the countryside, or leaving glasses of bottles in woodlands as the sunlight shining through them can start fires.

The service is also advising people to report any fires immediately, to not attempt to tackle the flames and to leave the area as quickly as possible.
