Council votes for summer ban plus bans on dogs at two play areas and on the village football pitch.

A summer dog ban is to be imposed on Combe Martin beach as well as a year around ban in other areas of the village.

It follows an extra-ordinary meeting of the parish council on Wednesday (March 19) at the Community Centre, which saw councillors approve four dog control orders.

After a period of public speaking which saw booth sides of the argument aired, the council voted nine to one in favour of a dog ban for the beach between March 15 and September 30.

They also agreed a year around ban on dogs entering Arnolds Plot Play Area – the area known as Arnolds Plot and enclosed by fences, gates and stone walls.

Plus, dogs would be banned from entering Hollands Park Play Area, as well as from going on the football pitch at Hollands Park. As owners, the council may decide to lift the pitch ban for the annual dog show, and the prohibition does not apply to registered guide dogs.

The council said a consultation period from February 13 to March 17 saw 54 votes in favour of the dog control orders, three against and six enquiries.

“In 2012 a survey of the village was undertaken by a group going under the heading SOB (Save Our Beach), this came back with 517 wanting a beach dog ban in the summer with 22 against,” said council chairman, Councillor Graham Coombs.

“It was against this background that the Council decided to apply for a dog control order not only for the beach but to include Arnolds Plot Play Area, Hollands Park Play Area and Hollands Park Football Field.”

The parish council intends to have the orders in place by May.
