STICKLEPATH Primary School is marking its 60th birthday and honouring the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War One with a special performance of their play ‘Before the leaves fall’.

Pupils from year five and six have been busily rehearsing for several months ahead of their showing at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple on July 10, and gave the Barnstaple public a sneak peek of what to expect in a rehearsal on the Square on Thursday.

Around 50 of the 85-strong cast were out in force, belting out popular World War One songs in their 1910s-inspired outfits to impressed onlookers.

Claudia Oke, who teaches years five and six as well as drama, said: “We started work on it in January.

“It’s definitely a proud moment to see it come together. They have all worked so, so hard.

“They’ve really engaged with learning about World War One and now they have the opportunity to showcase that.

“I’m so excited to see them perform on stage.”

Miss Oke also thanked all of the local businesses who have been involved in making the show possible.

Ticket sales have been going well, with around half of the theatre sold out for the youngsters’ debut performance of local writer Caroline Hinton’s play at 7pm on Thursday July 10.
