A series of walks and trails led by National Trust head rangers will reveal the beauty, history, geology and wildlife of North Devon this October.

The events are part of the trust’s nationwide celebration of ‘The Great British Walk’ and will take in some of the region’s stunning seascapes and views.

Jonathan Fairhurst kicks off the walks with a six mile ramble around Baggy Point to Woolacombe on Monday (October 1) at 10am.

“I love this challenging walk with its stunning seascapes over to Hartland, Lundy Island and across towards Woolacombe Bay,” he said.

“As the coast path gradually rises towards the tip of Baggy Point it ends with towering sea cliffs. The area is full of dummy pillboxes used by the Americans as training for D-Day and one can often see kestrels too. At the end there is the lovely café at Sandleigh for a well earned cup of tea.”

On Wednesday (October 3) join Justin Seedhouse for a 5.5 mile Bucks Mill walk around Bideford Bay, starting Bucks Mills 10am.

‘The Delights of Watersmeet’ with Julian Gurney is on Friday, October 5 and there is a Heddon Valley, Woody Bay and West Exmoor ramble with Steve Mulberry on Saturday, October 6.

Every Sunday in October there will be a guided walk around the Arlington Estate, with a Fungi Foray on October 14, looking at the flora and fauna and learning more about the history of the grounds.

There is fun for families too with a Baggy Point Fairytale Adventure on October 28 - accompanied by a professional storyteller, families will see a whole different side to Baggy Point in Croyde.

A full list of walks is available, or if walkers just want to do their own thing there are a series of downloadable trails at www.nationaltrust.org.uk.
