A SPORTS field in Roundswell has been renamed in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The Tews Lane Sports and Recreation Ground will now be called the Queen Elizabeth II Playing Fields Tews Lane, following a decision by Fremington Parish Council last night (Monday).

The parish council, which leases the land from North Devon Council, has been able to dedicate the site through the Fields In Trust program.

The programme aims to protect 2012 outdoor recreational spaces in communities all across the country as a permanent living legacy of the Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics.

Local councillor Rodney Cann said that North Devon Councillors and officers had worked hard against tight time restrictions to register the recreational field and protect in perpetuity.

He said: “This really significant for the Roundswell and Bickington community to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

“A spin-off of the dedication will open up opportunities to apply for grant funding to improve the sport facilities on the ground.

“The dedication also will ensure that the sports area will be protected in perpetuity from the growing threat of development in the area.”
