POLICING across North Devon was given a makeover on Saturday as members of the special constabulary took part in a ‘take over’ day.

The national scheme designed to highlight the role played by the constabulary saw six special constables in Bideford, Barnstaple and Holsworthy take part.

Special constables are part of the UK’s part time police force and are made up of volunteer members of the public who have full police powers.

Accompanied by officers they crewed response cars and dealt with a number of incidents including a neighbourhood dispute, a stolen caravan and a male self-harming with a knife.

There were also three domestic abuse incidents and one drug incident which resulted in two arrests, with special constables writing their own statements and paperwork.

Special constable Doug Lambden, who took part in the day in Torridge along with his colleagues SC Ross Prior and SC Matt Rookes, said: “I am very proud to be in the special constabulary and proud of the specials I work with, Saturday just highlighted this.

“It was a great learning curve for us but it instilled confidence and increased our skill set to be able to deal with any situation that is given to us.”

The weekend also saw interviews for special constable applicants, during which three new recruits were recommended for initial training and appointment to North and West Devon.

Superintendent Michele Slevin, commander for the North and West Devon Police area, added: “The opportunity to recognise the fantastic professional work that our colleagues within the special constabulary undertake is great.

“The diversity of the incidents that they attend and deal with crosses the whole range of policing.

“Their commitment, as volunteers to support in making the communities they live and work in safer, needs to be celebrated.

“This weekend’s initiative really highlights their work and helps to encourage others who want to give back something to their communities.”
