RAIN and high winds are expected to hit the South West overnight tonight (Sunday) into tomorrow.

Widespread rainfall of 20-30mm is expected during the early hours of Monday, with the possibility of up to 40-50mm on high ground, such as Dartmoor.

The Environment Agency (EA) said that although most rivers had receded from the peaks seen over Christmas, they are full and the ground is saturated, which means there is an increased risk of surface and river water flooding.

From tomorrow onwards, large waves and strong winds are expected along the south and west coasts, which may lead to spray and waves over-topping promenades and coastal defences, especially on Thursday as spring tides approach.

There are currently nine flood alerts have been issues, although none are currently in place for North Devon.

The EA said there was a possibility that further flood warnings could be issued overnight, and urged people to take steps to protect themselves and their properties.

Throughout the festive period, EA teams have been out checking flood defences, removing debris from rivers, monitoring river levels from the incident rooms and issuing alerts and warnings, and supporting local authorities.

Drivers are also urged to check the latest flood updates ahead of their latest journeys – and not to drive through floodwater.
