The 37-year-old from North Molton will begin his six-month running quest on Sunday for North Devon charity Amigos.

A South Molton Community College teacher is tying the laces on his running shoes for an epic nine-race challenge.

Richard Uffendell, 37 from North Molton, begins his six-month running quest with the Wild Night Run on Dartmoor on Sunday to raise money for North Devon-based charity Amigos.

The school’s head of PE will also take on the London Marathon, a 32-mile ultra-marathon and the gruelling 24-hour Hope 24.

South Molton CC has run a trip for pupils to Kira Farm in Uganda to see the work that Amigos does there for several years now, and Richard is going for the first time this year.

“I’ve done a few years of fundraising for a charity called Bliss, including running the London Marathon last year,” said Richard, who was inspired to raise £7,500 in three years for baby charity Bliss after his three daughters were all born prematurely.

“I wanted to do this to raise money as I always say I’d never ask the children do anything I wouldn’t do.

“We’re taking 18 students to Uganda on July 2 until the 15th and they all have to raise £1,700 for their travel and some to the charity. They’re all on target to do that which is a fantastic achievement.

“I think the children will learn a lot being outside Europe and in a different culture. I’m told we’ll only have electricity for one hour a day so maybe they’ll learn not to take as many things for granted afterwards.

“They will see how things like Facebook aren’t even on the map in Uganda and meet people who totally believe in how education can change their lives.

“It will be a great, life-changing experience.”
