GREEN fingered pupils at South Molton Infant School have shown they’ve got the bottle to help tackle eco issues.

Youngsters have started growing their own vegetables and flowers in a greenhouse made from recycled plastic bottles.

Flowers grown will be used to create hanging baskets in the playground and raised beds for a new garden area being developed at the front of the North Road school.

The first crop of potatoes is destined for the school canteen.

Head teacher Tom Parkin said empty bottles were collected from parents and staff and the greenhouse assembled using a wooden frame and garden canes.

“Play leader Janet Farrow led the project and created the structure with groups of children. It even managed to remain intact after the horrendous weather we have had over the last month.

“All the materials for the flooring and frame were donated to us by our local RGB store and Mole Valley Farmers.”

Mr Parkin said the school was always developing outdoor learning opportunities to offer pupils.

“We’d noticed it has a really positive effect on behaviour back in the classroom, as pupils come back more focussed on what they are doing and feel more ready to learn,” he said.

“Our next project is to recycle an old shipping container into an outdoor classroom, with windows, doors and a living roof with plants and greenery.

“It is at the planning stage at the moment but we hope the project will be under way by September – it’s going to be pretty amazing when it’s finished,” he added.
