New song by local performers inspired by the theatres will celebrate the special places in North Devon

Singers from around the region have joined forces to produce a new song for North Devon’s theatres, and to promote the area.

A Place That Saved Me has been written by Sarah Cadogan-Wright and a host of local talent.

These include Yazzy Chamberlain, Tamsin Ball, Alyssa Wint, Robbie Cook, Robert Stirzaker, Rosie Day, John Barton and Conner Gould.

Barnstaple mayor Julie Hunt also performs on the track, which was recorded at Pound House Productions near Braunton on Friday.

It will be launched at the end of March together with an accompanying video.

Singer-songwriter Sarah, who performs under the name Sarah Devonshire, organised the theatres march in January.

She said the song was intended to promote entertainment and arts in North Devon and the region as a whole, inspired by the love local people have for their two theatres.

“We all have great memories of places and it’s about the love of various places that people have,” she said.

“Here in North Devon we rely on tourism and I thought it would be a good idea to promote the area as a whole, to include all the different wonderful things that we have to offer in this corner of the world.

“And I am trying to get people to understand that those theatres are really special to some people, for example the children who have had the opportunity to perform there. If it was not for places like that, some people would not have found their vocation in life.”

Julie Hunt added: “I think it’s brilliant that people are so passionate about their theatres.

“In Harstad in Norway, the council there take full control of their theatres and run them.

“I think we could learn a lot from them. What’s happened is a disaster but we can’t keep harping on about it, we need to move on and get the theatres open asap.”

The Gazette will keep you updated on when and where the official launch of the song will take place.
