Be Clear on Cancer roadshows in Bideford and Barnstaple to warn people what to look out for with the early signs of the disease.

A series of Be Clear on Cancer roadshows are visiting North Devon in the coming days to urge people to be vigilant of the first signs of the disease.

Latest figures show there were 465 new cases of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, diagnosed in Devon in 2012, with 52 people dying.

Early diagnosis is crucial and means treatment is more likely to be successful.

The roadshow is part of Public Health England’s skin cancer pilot campaign and a nurse will be on hand to talk to anyone who has questions and to provide advice on visiting their GP.

It will be at Atlantic Village in Bideford tomorrow (Tuesday) from 9am-6pm and again on Wednesday.

From Thursday until Saturday this week it is at Green Lanes in Barnstaple from 9am-5.30pm and again on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

“In Devon we are fortunate to have a relatively reduced risk of developing life limiting diseases such as cancers,” said Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing.

“However our rates of skin cancer are above the national average. Detecting it early can save lives, so we are asking people to tell their doctor if they notice any persistent or unusual changes to their skin.

“We are supporting this campaign as part of our work to increase people’s awareness of the signs and symptoms of skin cancer and encourage them to follow up any concerns, and this will enhance the work we are also doing to encourage people to protect their skin from the sun’s harmful rays.”
