IT was always going to be a challenge fraught with danger.

If an audience of a dozen-or-so burly workmen wasn’t off-putting enough, the job of getting nearly naked and serving breakfast in sub-zero temperatures was always going to separate the men from the boys. And so it proved on a bitterly cold morning in Barnstaple on Friday.

Voice 106 presenter James Chapple, businessman Paul Momber and willing volunteer Ben Kerr all agreed to strip off and spend two hours serving food at a popular Seven Brethren catering van in aid of North Devon Hospice.

They’d challenged owner June Cann, staff and customers at the Double C Catering van to raise £500 but hadn’t figured on the day of the stunt turning out be one of the coldest of the year.

“I pulled up in the car park and the temperature reading in the car said minus six,” shivered Paul, dressed in a pair of shorts and a dickie-bow.

“When I suggested doing this, it was a warm sunny day – I had no idea it would be as cold as this.

“We’re talking about making it an annual event – but in June.

The trio raised £700 for the hospice and while brave Paul took it in his stride, fellow “waiters” James and Ben needed a little more persuasion to disrobe.

“It was absolutely freezing but fair play to them, they stripped off in the end,” added Paul.
