A KINGSLEY School sixth-form student inspired by friends to raise money for Children’s Hospice South West has taken on Britain’s highest mountain.

Emma Richards, 18, raised more than £400 for the Barnstaple-based charity by scaling the 1,344 metre-high Ben Nevis in May, a challenge which she had expected to take on alongside some Royal Marines.

“The reason I chose the charity was because I have had friends who had terminal illness and spent their weeks and final days there being well cared for by the amazing staff,” said Emma, who lives in Taunton.

“The hospice doesn’t get enough praise for how much they do for so many families in and around the South West.

“All I could think about was all the children in the hospice and how many families I will be helping because of all my kind sponsors who believed in me to complete the challenge.”

Emma managed to reach the snow-covered summit within four hours, before taking in the views and returning to base.

Her school said they were ‘very proud’ of Emma, adding: “her determination and generosity of spirit are a fantastic example to everyone.”

Emma said she had been convinced to make the climb by her Dad, alongside a number of Marines who had been injured in Afghanistan – a major milestone in their recoveries.

Unfortunately they were unable to take part as they are training for the London Invictus Games – an international military games - in September.

Their walk has been rescheduled for Easter 2015, and after getting the climbing bug this year, Emma plans to join them for a second ascent next year.
