A DECISION on the development of Bideford’s East-the-Water Wharves has been delayed for a further six weeks.

Torridge District Council’s community and resources committee were due to hear a report on the proposed development at its next meeting on Tuesday.

But today (Friday) the council decided to postpone the report until its meeting on June 17 to allow members more time to read the lengthy report.

Jenny Wallace, head of paid services for the council, said: “Given the intricacies and fine detail of the report and the need to ensure that members are fully informed so that the right decision is made for Torridge and for the people of Bideford, we have decided to give all parties extra time to digest the information.

“Members must be given every opportunity to read, absorb, and then if necessary challenge the facts, figures and recommendations contained within the report before going to the vote.

“We feel that given the importance of the project to the future of Torridge and Bideford, it is only right and proper that members are given more time.”

The council confirmed it had not yet had an application from Bideford Town Council to register the site as a ‘community asset’.

If successful, the application would delay proceedings for six months so the town council could try to raise enough money to take on the site and turn it into a public open space.

A Torridge District Council spokesman confirmed the decision to delay proceedings was not taken because of the town council’s plans.

He said with the elections it was decided councillors needed more time to absorb the report as it was not a decision to be taken lightly.
