Dog rehoming charity K9 Focus has launched its own version of the New Year Honours to find reward outstanding canine companions, workers and those that are simply top dog!
K9 FOCUS the dog rescue charity has teamed up with the North Devon Gazette to present the North Devon K9 Heroes awards for unsung four-legged friends throughout the region.
One of the North Devon charity’s aims is to bring animals and people together, so to showcase some of the wonderful ways dogs can bring joy and happiness into the lives of so many, volunteers decided they wanted to launch the canine equivalent of the New Year’s Honours.
Entry is free and there are some fabulous prizes to be won for you and your faithful canine companion. Even better, there is free micro-chipping available for all entries.
There are four categories: Pawsome Company — For any dog providing companionship
Working Hero — For any working dogs, be it in agriculture, security, services or military.
Rescue to Hero — For any rescued or rehomed dog that has gone on to prove itself heroically and show bravery, in whatever way that might be.
Just Because — A category for any dog, just because you love them.
There are some great prizes to be won too. The overall winner will receive two nights at dog-friendly, four star hotel accommodation anywhere in UK, while the first prize winner of each category will win a fantastic doggy hamper plus free grooming session.
Second and third places in each category will win Kong toys plus all placings will receive a rosette. All winners will get free entry into one of the K9 Focus summer shows at Braunton, Ilfracombe, Torrington or Exeter.
“As a rescue charity we deal daily with dogs that have been abused and abandoned and are constantly looking for responsible homes to take these dogs in and make them part of their family for life,” said K9 Focus founder Lynne Hall.
“We wanted to run these awards to highlight the joy and companionship dogs bring into our lives and hope it encourages more people to take a four-legged friend into their home, and more importantly, to their heart.
“Plus we wanted to reward the dogs themselves, as we are sure the winners will just love their hampers.”
* To enter, all you have to do is submit a picture of the dog you are nominating, what category you are entering them in, and their story, to the details below.
Owners are welcome to enter their own dogs, but please make sure you tell us exactly why they should be named a ‘K9 Hero’, what they have done and what it means to you.
The competition is being sponsored by Market Veterinary Centre, and vet Alan Jaques will be on the judging panel, as will representatives from K9 Focus and the Gazette. North Devon K9 Heroes is also being sponsored by Forthglade Foods in Winkleigh.
The closing date for entries is Wednesday, February 5. In the coming weeks we hope to profile some of your nominations here and tell their story.
