District councils to focus on car parks as county council takes on-street parking back in-house.

PARKING services across North Devon and Torridge have received a make over with Devon County Council managing only on-street parking.

From the beginning of April the county council will be taking on-street parking back in-house, with the district councils focusing solely on car parks.

But some councillors have raised concerns over what the changes could mean for the area.

Councillor Roger Johnson, deputy leader of Torridge, said: “It will be interesting to see what level of service DCC will provide on-street.

“I’m concerned we will see a reduced level of enforcement which could end up causing major traffic problems in our town centres.”

Car park teams will wear a new, navy uniform and taken on more of a community role, where as county council staff will wear a black and yellow uniform.

Councillor Malcolm Prowse, North Devon portfolio holder for the economy, said: “The positive management of our car parks is essential to the economy of North Devon. It’s not just about issuing tickets but it’s about helping people out and promoting the area positively to visitors.”
