CHILDREN at Ilfracombe Junior School have helped design a stained glass window for their school.

The colourful new window, which features a rainbow, sun and space rockets, was officially blessed by The Right Reverend Alan Winstanley, assistant Bishop of Exeter, on Wednesday.

Ten year-four pupils were selected to help come up with the inspirational design along the theme ‘lighting up learning’.

Teacher Debbie Spelman, who is also the collective worship co-ordinator at the school said: “The children came up with all the drawings needed.

“It was a fun project to work on and the children really enjoyed it – they were very excited to see the final design in the window.”

Young artist Max Grisenti, aged nine, said: “It was really fun doing the drawing and the final result is really good.”

The window itself was made by glass artists Heather McNeilly, who owns Shoreline Glass in Ilfracombe High Street.

Heather said: “I’ve done a couple of stained glass windows for churches before but this is the first I have made for a school.”

Bishop Winstanley said: “It really is a stunning window; it’s important to have something at the entrance to a Church of England school that says ‘this is what we are all about’.”
