WORK has begun this week to restore Richmond Dry Dock to its former working glory once more.

A five year contract has been leased on the dock in Appledore to FTD Marine who will use it to scrap old ships.

Owner Simon Maunder was refused planning permission last year to build a 24-flat development around the dock, despite appealing to the Secretary of State.

The main reason the appeal was dismissed was due to the historical importance of the dock.

The contractors working on the dock estimate it will be ready for use in approximately two weeks.

Mr Maunder was unavailable to comment on the development.

  • This is good and bad news. Obviously great news, in that the dry dock is going to be re-used and it will create much needed new jobs linking to Appledore's shipbuilding heritage. On the negative side, laws and acceptable levels of tolerated noise and pollution risk to the public have changed greatly since the early 1980s. Remember that old boats and ships may have possible lead paint and asbestos lagging MUST to be disposed of safely! Overall though - provided those issues are dealt with properly I think it will be a really good thing, and excellent for Appledore residents, I could be definitely a more positive outcome than what was originally proposed.

  • How strange that just a few weeks after his appeal was dismissed, Mr Maunder has found a company to run the dry dock. Despite him saying that there is NO other use except housing!
