SURPRISE visitors the Red Arrows caused a stir after an unexpected fly past at Ilfracombe Rescue Day.

The elite RAF display team’s presence at the annual emergency services showcase on the pier was almost as much of a surprise to organisers as spectators – and all down to filling out the ‘wrong’ form.

Marnie Quy of Events 4 Ilfracombe said when they asked for a display by the Seaking from Chivenor, they were told it was already booked at Minehead, but could still have a fly past if they completed a different form.

“When I filled it in I saw all these other tick boxes, and one of them was the Red Arrows, so I thought ‘why not’?” she explained.

“We got confirmation from Chivenor but nothing from the Red arrows until a couple of weeks ago. That was it until just before the event when this guy called and said ‘Hi Marnie, this is Red 2, one of the pilots…’”

The squadron were also involved with the Minehead event, so they could do a flypast at Ilfracombe and soared over Lantern Hill around midday, with distinctive vapour trails blazing.

Marnie said Rescue Day itself had gone very well, and although the programme order had to be re-arranged because of the winds, everything was able to go ahead and the rains held off.

“We estimated thousands of people attended and they took more than £5,000 on the gate, a large proportion of which will go to the Ilfracombe RNLI recovery vehicle appeal for the new lifeboat,” she said.
