The crematorium has donated more than £8,000 to local charities so far this year.

A CREMATORIUM has donated more than £8,000 for local charities from recycling metals removed following cremations this year.

North Devon Crematorium has donated £4,000 to Northam-based charity Families in Grief (FIG) from the scheme running with the consent of the bereaved,

The crematorium also made a donation to Children’s Hospice South West in January of more than £4,000 raised through the project.

The scheme is run by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management and sees metals from the construction of the coffin and orthopaedic implants removed from the cremated remains and safely recycled.

As well as raising money for the charities, the process also has a more positive environmental impact, preventing harmful pollutants being buried in the ground.

Chris Beach, Manager of the North Devon Crematorium, said: “I’m really pleased that we have been able to nominate Families in Grief to benefit from the proceeds of our recycling scheme.

“I would hope that the bereaved families who gave consent for the metals to be recycled will take comfort in knowing that the donation will make a difference not only in environmental terms but also in helping FIG support children and young people who have experienced a loss of a loved one.”

Cllr Simon Inch, chairman of the North Devon Crematorium Joint Committee, said: “I hope this donation will help many families, both in Torridge and North Devon, to receive support when they lose a loved one.

“The charity does a great job supporting children and young people who have lost someone close to them.”

Catherine Langford, chairman of Trustees from FIG, says: “We are overwhelmed and so grateful to receive this donation - we are all volunteers running our small charity and this amount of money will make a huge difference to the way we can support the children, young people and families of North Devon and Torridge who have been bereaved. Thank you very much indeed.”
