DEVON’S largest annual celebration of wildlife comes to Barnstaple this Saturday.

The eighth annual Wildlife Festival is being held on the Square from 10am to 4pm and promises visitors a really wild day out.

The all-weather free event, organised by Devon Wildlife Trust, will bring people face-to-face with wildlife, including birds of prey, bats and a host of ‘minibeasts’.

Other attractions will include a cinema bus; storyteller; face painters; and stilt walkers.

The event was last staged in the town in 2011 and last year’s event in Plymouth drew more than 12,000 visitors.

Event organiser Jo Pullin said the 2014 festival promised to be the best yet.

“It will be a special mix of things to see and things to do,” she said.

“It’s about getting hands on and doing things for local wildlife. On the day people will be able to make a nest box, design badges, take part in crafts and get their face painted. It’s a great day out and there’s no charge for entry.”

The marine-themed festival, supported by BID Barnstaple, will also see the culmination of the Starfish Trail. For the past few weeks, children have been invited to hunt for a series of 12 starfish placed in local shops and other venues.

On the day, visitors will be able to help an artist construct a giant starfish.
