Archant

1830s grandfather clock was built less than four miles away from its new home at Trimstone Manor.

A timely coincidence has brought a 19th century grandfather clock made in Ilfracombe back to North Devon after it found a new home at Trimstone Manor.

Owner Philip Milton was offered the rare 1830s clock through an unrelated introduction to Chris Cluff, who runs Priory Clocks in Taunton and was amazed to discover it had been made less than four miles away from his hotel and restaurant.

The clock was built by Henry Webber of 35, High Street, Ilfracombe, which today is occupied by Conningtons Jewellers – which sells clocks and watches.

Bizarrely, it is the second local grandfather clock that has made its way ‘home’ to North Devon and Trimstone – in February 2011 the Gazette reported how Philip and Helen Milton had spotted an 1805 grandfather clock on EBay.

This one was made in Barnstaple and they collected it from Ivybridge after successfully winning the online auction.

The latest addition has joined the earlier time piece in the dining room at Trimstone Manor’s aptly named Tyme Restaurant.

“I am very pleased to have acquired this fine clock, a very tall gentleman and one who we shall have to remember to wind regularly,” said Philip.

“He goes nicely against our much smaller and earlier non-working Barnstaple clock made by a Mr Perryman.”

Philip and Helen are happy for anyone to visit Trimstone Manor to see the clock or in time, any of the additional local art which they have been keen to try to locate to decorate the hotel and restaurant.
