Free awareness event will give people a chance to learn more about common sight loss condtition in Bideford this weekend.

AN event is being held in Bideford this weekend to raise awareness of a ‘well kept secret’ which is the most common form of sight loss in the UK.

Age-related macular degeneration destroys the central vision and affects more than half-a-million people across the UK.

The Bideford Macular Society support group is holding an awareness day on Saturday at Lavington Church in Bridegland Street from 10.30am until 2.30pm.

“This event is an opportunity to meet other local people affected by macular degeneration and to get information,” said Tom McInulty, one of the Macular Society’s group support and development managers.

“We’re hoping this event will help us to raise awareness of macular conditions, as well as enabling people to ask questions on living with central vision loss.”

Lilan Rennie, of Northam, is a member of the support group, and said: “I thought I was the only one with the macular problem and didn’t know how I would cope.

“Joining the local support group, meeting others with the same problems and seeing how well they deal with their limited sight has given me hope.”

During the open event people can drop in and see the displays, pick up literature and learn more about the condition as well as asking questions of members.
