PUPILS at West Croft School in Bideford are busy putting together a mosaic to display proudly on the town’s fire station.

The winning design was created by year six pupil Amber Rutherford-Brown, and was chosen by a panel of judges including town mayor Simon Inch, Cllr Andrew Eastman and Bideford fire station commander Bruce Lesslie.

Graham Rooke, Bideford station manager, said the pupils had been set the challenge to come up with a design for the front of the station.

Amber’s design, which depicts the Bideford Long Bridge, was chosen as the winner and is this week being made into a mosaic measuring 6ft by 4ft by the school pupils.

The runner up was Ruth Harding, 10, whose design will be put onto the doors on the fire service’s new electric Twizy car.

Jessie Wood and Erin Mahoney, who took joint third prize, have won a trip to the fire station.

Mr Rooke said: “I want to thank all of the children that took part for their wonderful designs, the management team at West Croft and of course our judges.”

Head teacher, Andrew Brierley added: “Although I wasn’t involved in the judging, I could see as the entries came in that the standard was very high and a lot of care and attention had been taken by the children.

“The judges’ decision must have been a hard one but I think that the choice for the winning design was a good one and I look forward to seeing the finished artwork on public display soon.”

It is hoped the design will be completed today (Friday) and will be placed on the front of the fire station building in Old Town, Bideford.
