The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall arrived in Barnstaple this morning (Thursday)

Barnstaple welcomed royal visitors this morning as Prince Charles and Camilla descended on town.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall arrived for a tour of Barnstaple Pannier Market shortly after 11am.

Guided around by Mayor of Barnstaple Julie Hunt and town centre manager Hannah Harrington, the Prince and Duchess met stall holders, including Gretta Greenslade, who has worked at the market since 1954.

They also met representatives from local charities.

It was also the Duchess’ birthday today and she was presented with a cake to mark 70 years, while Charles was presented with cuff-links by the town council and a Barnstaple shilling.

Local singer Yazzy sung in the market with pupils from Bishops Tawton and Orchard Vale primary schools during the royal tour, and sang happy birthday to the Duchess.

Camilla also bought a hat from one of the market stalls plus a Devon pasty.

Mrs Hunt said the visit was ‘absolutely splendid’.

“They overran for about 20 minutes, and quite honestly I think they could have spent the whole day here,” she said.

“It was absolutely lovely.

“Camilla was very down to earth. She was really touched that people had taken the time for birthday, and they took the cake with them.

“Charles was very caring and came across as very affectionate.

“It was just lovely for them to come to Barnstaple, as we do sometimes get forgotten.”

Mrs Hunt said she has invited the royals back to Barnstaple to visit the historic guildhall.

Town centre manager Hannah Harrington said it was a ‘fantastic morning’ for the town.

She added: “It was lovely to see so many people out in Barnstaple to see them visit.

“They spoke to as many people as possible, stall holders and members of the public.

“The prince was really interested in everything we are doing and loved the building.”

The royal couple were also presented with a special North Devon edition of the board game Monopoly

The royal family could soon be fighting over possession of Clovelly, Lundy Island and Woolacombe beach… after Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall were presented with a special edition North Devon Monopoly set during a visit to Barnstaple!

North Devon Hospice were invited to meet Prince Charles and Camilla as they visited the local pannier market this week, taking the opportunity to present the board game to the Duchess as a gift. North Devon Monopoly has been produced by the hospice to raise vital funds, with more than 2,000 boxes having been snapped up already.

Stephen Roberts, Chief Executive of North Devon Hospice, said: “It was a real privilege to be part of the event. We’d heard that the royal family enjoyed playing board games together, and as it was the Duchess’ 70th birthday this week, it made complete sense to give her a North Devon Monopoly set as a memento of their visit. I hope they will find time to sit round a table and play a game at some point in the future, and think fondly of North Devon.”

All proceeds from the sale of North Devon Monopoly go to support the vital work of the hospice. To get your box visit www.northdevonmonopoly.co.uk.

Jenny Rutter, a hospice volunteer for almost 15 years, was pleased to meet Prince Charles and show him a photo of himself from back in 1970. “My late husband was serving in the RAF in Kenya when Prince Charles came to visit their unit. So I brought along a photograph taken on the day with them both in, and it was lovely to show it to Charles all these years later. He said he remembered the visit well, which was nice to hear. It was fantastic to see the royal couple in Barnstaple and I was pleased to represent North Devon Hospice on the day. Volunteers play such a huge part in the day-to-day life of the charity so it was a privilege to represent all those who give their time.”

Head of Care at the hospice, Keely Dempsey, also got to meet the Duchess of Cornwall. “She was interested to hear about the hospice and the care we provide to local people. I feel that North Devon Hospice is part of the fabric of this area, thanks to the community who support us as we support them, so we were extremely proud to be part of the royal visit to North Devon.”

Also present at the royal visit were members of 24 Commando Regiment from RMB Chivenor, who were taking part in a charity challenge raising funds for North Devon Hospice. The Commandos had been part of a 7-day challenge, running 16 miles every day, taking them from St Ives in Cornwall and finishing at the royal visit in Barnstaple’s Pannier market.

The visit to Barnstaple was the first engagement of the day Charles and Camilla, going on to Lifton, Cheriton Bishop and Okehampton.
