Youngsters will learn valuable life skills in 10th Junior Life Skills event in Bideford.

MORE than 1,300 primary school children will be learning important life saving skills next month including fire safety and the effects of alcohol.

The 10th Junior Life Skills event, run jointly by Torridge and North Devon Councils, began at Bideford Town Football Club began on Monday and will run until June 13.

Year six pupils will learn how to cope with day-to-day dangers and real-life emergencies with scenarios from a number of organisations including the police, fire service, coastguard, Western Power, ambulance personnel and Dogs Trust.

Councillor Phil Collins, leader of Torridge District Council, said: “It’s a real life skills programme which I am pleased to support as a council.

“I am in no doubt that the 2014 event will give our youngsters the confidence they need to use their newly learnt skills if they find themselves in a situation that demands quick thinking.”

Yvette Gubb, executive member for community at North Devon Council, said: “Junior Life Skills has proven to be a really successful way of teaching young people about important issues and risks that they may face in life.

“The interactive, hands-on activities are always well received by pupils and schools.

“Therefore, I’m pleased we’re again able to help organise this event, to help give our young people the knowledge of how to deal with certain situations and hopefully prevent other potential dangers from happening in the first place.”
