Police pull plug on private party after ‘illegal rave’ fears

Loud music from 18th birthday party could be heard across Barnstaple.

POLICE closed down a private party in Barnstaple last night (Saturday) after concerns were raised about an ‘illegal rave’ taking place.

Loud music was heard across the town but prompted a flurry of complaints from people living in the Whiddon Valley area.

After receiving numerous calls from around 9.40pm onwards, officers traced the noise to an 18th birthday party on private land at Westacott.

The party was taking place in a marquee with the consent of the land owner but police asked the organiser to turn the music down, which they did.

The party had been advertised on a social media website and police returned when more complaints came in as the volume of the music began to increase.

Officers used powers under Section 64 of the Criminal Justice Act to shut down the music shortly after midnight, rather than 3am, as planned.

Inspector Ian Dawson said: “Whilst we appreciate that the public will hold parties please remember that you may be causing others a nuisance.

“We would like to point out that following this event there has been no crime complaints from the local area.”
