Exmoor meeting focuses on ‘industrial scale poaching’ as one of the main issues police and other agencies want to tackle.

Two police forces plus other agencies have met to discuss ways of dealing with rural crime in the region, including poaching.

The event at Dulverton included Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, Avon and Somerset Police, Exmoor National Park, the Forestry Commission, Crown estates and river bailiffs.

North Devon Sector Inspector Roger Bartlett said there had been a particular focus on ‘industrial scale poaching’, with a ‘poaching summit’ agreed for the spring when the many agencies would join forces to look at tackling the problem.

Deer poaching has hit the headlines in recent months amid fears locally that it has spiralled out of control this season.

“Poaching in particular is a very important issue to the rural community, and clearly trespassers with firearms present a risk of harm to people, so we are determined to tackle this in partnership with other interested groups.”
