Croyde Surf Lifesaving Club puts in application to carte state-of-the-art clubhouse and RNLI rescue centre.

CROYDE Surf Lifesaving Club has this week unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art clubhouse, training and beach rescue centre at Croyde Beach.

It would be set into the cliff to the right of the main beach entrance underneath the Lime Kiln field and used as a summer base by RNLI lifeguards.

The club has 260 members, but this would its be first permanent home in a 50 year history. It currently leases a stone barn near the slipway for storage.

The new building will offer an excellent vantage point to monitor the beach, emergency first-aid facilities, equipment and vehicle storage, changing areas and a large beach safety training room, which the club wants to offer to other community groups.

A ramp would enable lifeguards to take vehicles straight on to the beach, without needing to negotiate the main entrance.

A planning application has been lodged with North Devon Council following years of work and meetings with the National Trust, which owns the field, plus beach owners Parkdean and the RNLI.

Funding has come through the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) via Leader 4 North Devon.

Plans by Jonathan Rhind Architects intend it to be a low-impact, environmentally sensitive building that can only be seen from the beach.

“This is the culmination of thousands of hours of work by our members, stretching back over more than 15 years, and we are incredibly excited about the plans,” said Richard Windsor, a long-time club member who is managing the project for CSLSC.

“We are looking at a building for the whole community – one that has strong ties to local people, businesses and charities.

“We’re particularly grateful to Parkdean and the National Trust for their support. Without the grants provided through Leader 4 and Defra none of the surveys we have done would have been possible.”

If planning permission is granted, the club will begin the process of applying for grants to make it happen.
