MAJOR plans for what amounts to a new town on the edge of Ilfracombe have been given the go ahead by councillors today (Wednesday).

A special meeting of North Devon Council planning committee at the Landmark this afternoon voted in favour of the ‘southern extension’ bid to create 750 new homes on the south side of town.

Councillors passed the plans with a 11 voting in favour and one abstention.

The development would also include community facilities such as shops, business units, a primary school and a health centre.

Also outlined are green open spaces plus cycle and pedestrian routes.

The site stretches from the developed southern edge of town near John Fowlers and Tesco up to the lower end of Cleave Wood, near Score Valley Country House, backing on to Bicclescombe and filling in most of the space between the A361 and New Barnstaple Road.

It is estimated the development could take up to 13 years to build, with around 60 houses constructed each year.

The application has been lodged by Resign Ltd, which includes artist Damien Hirst, who owns some of the site.

Check back for the full details from today’s meeting later.
