Attention turns to fundraising as plans for new local service get the green light from council.

PLANS for a new North Devon Hospice building in Holsworthy have been approved by Torridge District Council.

The charity now needs to raise £75,000 to build the centre, which will provide extra support to families, closer to home.

If successful, the Long House will be situated next to Holsworthy Medical Centre, offering a range of care services for cancer patients, including one-to-one counselling, support groups, complementary therapies and outpatient clinics.

Stephen Roberts, chief executive, said planning approval was ‘a huge step forward’.

“Now that we’ve had it confirmed, we are keen to press on with the project because it really will make a big difference to the people of Holsworthy and the surrounding area,” he said.

“We’ve been caring in this area for over 20 years, but because the journey to our main hospice base in Barnstaple is a two-hour round trip, this was often a big issue for patients and families.

“In particular, counselling, complementary therapies and support groups have been hard to access. Now, our care will be provided closer to home, which will have a big impact.”

Annie Hogg, who has been the face of the hospice in the Holsworthy area for the last 20 years, said she was also thrilled by the latest news.

“This is a big step in the right direction and it all seems very real now. Having cared for people in this area for such a long time, I know what a difference The Long House will make.”

Mr Roberts urged the community to get behind the fundraising efforts to help get the project off the ground.

“At the moment the plans are still just on paper, because we need the local community to support The Long House Appeal if we are going to make this dream a reality,” he said.

“We need to raise £75,000 to complete the fundraising for this building, so we’re asking the people of Holsworthy and the surrounding communities to make a donation or support us in any way they can.”

To support The Long House Appeal, make a donation at the hospice charity shops on The Square in Holsworthy, call 01271 347232 or visit www.northdevonhospice.org.uk.
