Developers hope store could be open in spring 2016 subject to planning permission.

PLANS for a new Waitrose store in Torrington have been submitted to Torridge District Council.

Waitrose and Kimberley Developments say the proposals for the site at Sydney House car park could create up to 150 jobs.

In February, hundreds of people turned out to The Plough Arts Centre to view the plans and developers received 476 responses – 76 per cent of which supported plans.

If the planning application is successful, Waitrose would hope to start work in spring 2015 with the new Waitrose opening in spring 2016.

Jonathan Banham, Waitrose development surveyor, said: “This is the only opportunity for Waitrose to open in Great Torrington, but developing new stores in town centres can bring a number of challenges and we have aimed to address those challenges wherever possible.

“We want to ensure those residents currently going elsewhere to do their main food shop are encouraged to shop locally and to bring new shoppers to the town centre so that we can play a part in helping it to thrive for many years to come.”
