North Devon and Torridge district councils to decide on new system of charges for housing or commercial planning schemes.

THE region’s district councils will decide today (Wednesday) whether to impose a ‘planning levy’ on any new developments.

North Devon and Torridge councils meet at Barnstaple Hotel to consider recommendations to approve a system of planning charges on housing or commercial schemes.

It will replace some of the existing section 106 agreements where developers make a contribution to the council in lieu of providing infrastructure for education, transport, recreation and so on.

A rate is being considered of £60 per square metre per residential development and £150 per square metre for supermarkets and retail warehouses.

According to NDC, it is not anticipated that developers will pay any more than they do now.

There would be exemptions such as some affordable housing schemes, self-build or community and charity developments.

If approved today, the proposals will go out to public consultation, which includes drafting a list of what the levy money would be spent on.
