Go-ahead given for 260ft-high generator, despite concerns raised by parish councils.

PLANS have been passed for a 260ft-high wind turbine near Newton Tracey.

The single turbine at Lower Litchardon Farm – around 3km south of Fremington – was given the go-ahead by North Devon Council Planning officers on Thursday, despite concerns from neighbouring parish councils.

Horwood Lovacott and Newton Tracey Parish Council and Fremington Parish Council both recommended refusal due to the impact on wildlife and local residents, and the turbine’s proximity to other consented schemes at nearby Knowle Farm and Collacott Farm.

Concerns were also raised by Westleigh Parish Council.

The Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) also opposed the plan for similar reasons.

Speaking to the Gazette following the decision, Penny Mills, chairman of the CPRE Torridge branch, said the turbine was equivalent in height to a 26-storey building.

“We are extremely disappointed that NDC has approved this application for something which will have such an impact over such a wide area of our North Devon countryside,” she said.

The applicant said the turbine would make a ‘significant contribution’ towards renewable energy targets and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions during its 25-year life span.

  • Yet another blot on the North Devon landscape which will do nothing other than line the pockets of the developer and landowner. Due to the intermittent output of wind generators, wind generators require continuous and inefficient back-up from conventional power stations - otherwise the lights WILL go out. Every one of these things which is put into operations costs every single consumer more on their electricity bills. Without subsidy, dragging more and more people into fuel poverty, wind turbines would not be a viable proposition.
