Committee decides to wait until county council votes on ‘Hospital Junction’ future

PLANNERS have deferred their decision on a proposal for 80 new homes near North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple until the county council has reached a decision on the future of a nearby junction.

At a meeting on Wednesday, North Devon Council’s planning committee voted to defer any decision on the site at Trayne Farm off Roborough Road until plans for a £1million roundabout at the ‘Hospital Junction’ are finalised.

Devon County Council is due to vote on that proposal at their next meeting on April 6.

Councillor Joe Tucker moved that the committee’s decision be deferred ‘to give Devon County Council time to make up their mind’.

Cllr Tucker was also keen for members to visit the site before coming to a conclusion.

Councillor Chris Turner also stated that councillors should be looking at a number of applications in the Pilton area ‘in a holistic manner’, as around 400 homes could be built in the area in the near future.

Pilton West parish councillor Paul Adams said there was ‘widespread concern that the county council seems to be pressurising North Devon Council’ and that more housing in the area would ‘further highlight the fragility of Barnstaple’s road infrastructure’.

The committee voted unanimously to defer the decision until their next meeting on April 16, when a number of local residents are expected to air their concerns.
