Barnstaple in foodie heaven as old fashioned bustle returns to pannier market.
THOUSANDS of people attended this year’s North Devon Foodfest in Barnstaple yesterday (Sunday).
Within minutes of the doors opening, the pannier market was abuzz with visitors keen to sample some of the very best produce the region has to offer.
Last year’s event attracted more than 13,000 and early indications suggest that this year’s festival surpassed even that.
The Victorian market had a real old fashioned bustle, with nearly 100 exhibitors offering visitors a taste of everything from artisan bread to locally-brewed beer.
There were also chef demonstrations throughout the day, including by Michelin Star-winning chef, Michael Caines of Gidleigh Park.
Kristy Webbe of North Devon+ said: “This year’s Foodfest was bigger and better with more producers, more food stalls than ever before; it was a great success and it’s fantastic that so many people supported the event.
“We’ve seen the festival increase in popularity since it began in 2008. It supports suppliers, growers and traders, but also promotes our area, helping to create a more productive economy.”
Anthony Johns of Johns of Instow and Appledore said: “Foodfest has been amazing. It’s our first year as sponsor and exhibitor and the festival has been busier and better than ever.
“We had excellent sales on the day, and it has definitely helped to raise the profile of Johns of Instow and Appledore to locals plus we’ve identified lots of new local producers. We look forward to returning to Foodfest in 2014.”
Now in its sixth year, the free event also provided the perfect platform to announce the winners of the annual North Devon Food and Drink Awards.
Winner of the best restaurant was Terra Madre at Broomhill; best café was John’s of Appledore; and best pub went to Parkham’s The Bell Inn.
Clovelly’s Dan the Fish Man won best local producer/retailer; Grayling’s Fish and Chips in Fremington won best food to go; and Lizzie’s Larder of Milton Damerel won the super service award.
