Can you help as Barnstaple features in well known Through Time book series?
OLD photographs are being sought for a new book on Barnstaple.
Local authors Denise Holton and Elizabeth Hammett are seeking pictures of areas around the town for a Barnstaple version of the well known Through Time series produced by Amberley Publishers.
It will feature images from the town dating from the dawn of photography through to the early 1990s, with a modern picture for comparison and information on how the area in question has changed.
Heritage Centre manager Denise and Elizabeth – a volunteer there – have already joined forces on one local history book, Barnstaple: A Celebration, a history of the town currently being reprinted and due out in May.
Barnstaple Through Time has been commissioned by Amberley as its latest addition to a popular series of some 330 full colour books covering towns and communities across the UK. It is due to be published in November.
The town has changed greatly during the past century or more and Denise and Elizabeth are keen to find images to illustrate that.
Examples might include the former North Devon Infirmary at the foot of Litchdon Street, the earlier days of the Square, the site of the Civic Centre – once known as “Monkey Island” and the days when Barnstaple Fair was held in the Square, then later along North Walk and Taw Vale.
“It will be really interesting to see how the town has changed,” said Denise.
“I think people will be surprised by the changes too, because often the process has been very gradual.”
If you have photographs that can help bring Barnstaple Through Time to life, contact Denise Holton at the Heritage Centre on 01271 373003, simply drop in, or post to: Barnstaple Heritage Centre, Queen Annes Walk, The Strand, Barnstaple, EX31 1EU. Alternatively email denise.holton@barnstapletowncouncil.co.uk. All pictures will be returned.
