Parade led through the town by a lone piper before wreaths laid at the cenotaph and the names of the fallen were read out.

THE fallen World War One soldiers of Bideford were remembered in a special parade and service through the town yesterday (Sunday).

Some 200 Bideford men lost their lives on the battlefields of France, Gallipoli and Mesopotamia.

To mark 100 years since the outbreak of war, a lone piper led a parade of Bideford Town Band and dignitaries through the town from Jubilee Square.

The parade moved to St Mary’s Church where a service took place to commemorate the fallen and wreaths were laid at the cenotaph.

Mayor Mervyn Langmeade, along with the mace bearer and a Royal British Legion representative then read out the names of the fallen.

Brian Saunders, of the Bideford Royal British Legion, said: “Our thanks go to the parish church for the service and Bideford town clerk’s office for the support and assistance given to Bideford Royal British Legion to enable this event to take place.

“Special thanks to Barry Turner, chairman of Bideford RBL, and his wife Carol and daughter Jonquill for their efforts in making the day such a success.”
