THE clear up continues today (Sunday) as North Devon counts the cost of Saturday’s strong winds and high tides.

In Ilfracombe, Hele Bay residents were out last night trying to keep debris away from the drains in a bid to prevent their home sand business from flooding, while this morning revealed debris, stones, sand, weed and chunks of tarmac strewn across the road.

At Parade Terrace on the end of Capstone Road in Ilfracombe, residents awoke to discover a gaping hole in the seawall next to their homes. It is not yet known what repairs might be needed or how severe the problem is.

In Combe Martin, the Fo’c’s’le Inn, regularly battered by high seas, saw windows smashed by debris hurled from the waves.

At Westward Ho! emergency repairs were made to the pebble ridge as the Adventure and Go-kart Centre was once again swamped by high seas, stones and debris.

A beachside deckchair hire hut at Saunton Beach was destroyed by the waves.

The Environment Agency still has flood warnings in place for North Devon coastal communities and the tidal River Torridge from Weare Giffard to Bideford.
