Crews from Bideford arrived at the scene along with the Chivenor search and rescue helicopter.

FIRE crews were called to Higher Gunstone in Bideford this morning (Saturday) to rescue a man from the roof of a two storey building.

The casualty had suffered a back injury and the fire service were called to assist in his rescue at around 10am.

The Chivenor search and rescue helicopter also attended the scene to winch the man from the roof.

But due to light winds, the crews were concerned the down draft from the Sea King would cause substantial damage to the building.

Neil Blackburn, group commander for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service, said the fire service then took the lead.

He said: “As the rescue was not time critical, we called the special rescue team from Barnstaple and a level two team from Hartland.

“Working with the special rescue teams and fire fighters from Bideford, the casualty was stretchered down using a line.”

The man was taken to North Devon District Hospital.
